Bike Safety
Audio Transcription: Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵis a big place and a bicycle is a great way to get around. With just a few simple steps, you can protect yourself, your bike, and those around you.
First, bicycles are considering vehicles on the Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵcampus. This means all cyclists have to follow the same traffic rules and signs as motor vehicles. Stop signs, yield signs, even no parking signs and no riding through the crosswalks.
In addition to roads, cyclists can take advantage of marked bike paths, a great way to avoid the traffic. Cyclists can only use sidewalks and walkways when no pedestrians are present.
Second, wear proper safety equipment, including a bicycle helmet. With near-constant construction at MSU, campus can be a bumpy ride at times. Wearing a helmet will keep you safe and avoid that trip to the emergency room. Keep in mind, the city of Starkville requires helmet use and will write a ticket for failure to wear, so play it safe and wear it whenever you ride.
Third, bike rack use is mandatory. You'll find them located all over campus and close to most residential and classroom buildings. Use a U-bar lock and always lock it up, even if you'll only be gone for a minute. Never lock your bike to light posts, trees, trashcans, signs, or other objects that aren't designed for bicycles. University police will remove it.
Finally, register your bike with parking and transit services. It's free and can help you find your bike if it's lost or stolen. Bicycles may be one of the most useful items you bring to college, and with a little care and mindfulness, can provide years of great transportation at Â̾ÞÈËÊÓƵ.
