STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擵oice faculty members in Mississippi State鈥檚 Department of Music are presenting an Italian opera recital Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. on MSU鈥檚 campus.

鈥淟a Regata Italiana鈥 takes place in the lecture-recital hall of the Music Building located at 124 Hardy Road. The program, which is free and open to the public, will sweep attendees through the rich history of Italian opera, featuring works from the Baroque era to the romantic styles of Bel canto and Verismo.

Featured performers include Associate Professor Roza Tulyaganova, soprano; Associate Professor Jeanette Fontaine, mezzo-soprano; and Instructor and Collaborative Pianist Anne Katherine Ragsdale, piano. Special guests include Adam Cromer, a professional singer from Montclair, New Jersey, who frequently performs in the New York area; music faculty members Anne-Ga毛lle Ravetto, Amy Catron, Matthew Haislip and Peter Infanger; and music students Willian da Silva, Adonijah Mpinga and Emma Woodward.

The performance begins with music from the Baroque period, a pivotal time in Italian opera history known for its extravagant spectacles, star performers, dramatic intrigues and exquisite composition. The second half of the recital explores Bel canto and Verismo, the hallmark of 19th-century opera, with an emphasis on beautiful, flowing vocal lines, intricate phrasing and the expressive power of the human voice.
