Acclaimed Akropolis Reed Quintet to open MSU鈥檚 2019-2020 Lyceum Series

STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擲even-time national prize-winning Akropolis Reed Quintet will open the upcoming season of Mississippi State鈥檚 Lyceum Series.

The quintet will perform on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Lee Hall鈥檚 Bettersworth Auditorium. Doors open approximately 30 minutes before the curtain rises on all fall and spring performances in the Lyceum Series, MSU鈥檚 long-running performing arts program.

Billed as 鈥淎merica鈥檚 premier reed quintet,鈥 the ensemble has been commended by Fanfare Magazine for its 鈥渋magination, infallible musicality and huge vitality.鈥 The group鈥檚 style features dynamic melodies and tempo changes and showcases various instruments, such as bassoon and oboe. While original compositions make up a majority of the group鈥檚 repertoire, classic pieces like Vivaldi鈥檚 鈥淟a Folia鈥 and Debussy鈥檚 鈥淐hildren鈥檚 Corner鈥 also are within its extensive skill set.

Akropolis鈥檚 recent accolades include the 2014 Fischoff Gold Medal and the 2015 Fischoff Educator Award, among other national prizes for chamber music.

Founded at the University of Michigan in 2009, the quintet includes alumni from the Association of Performing Arts Professionals鈥 prestigious Young Performer鈥檚 Career Advancement Program. Akropolis has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and Chamber Music America, among other organizations.

The group has released three studio albums, including 鈥淭he Space Between Us,鈥 called 鈥減ure gold, shot through with tenderness and grace鈥 by the San Francisco Chronicle. For more information, visit .
