STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擬ississippi State鈥檚 Department of Art is welcoming back a 2010 graphic design alumnus for a public talk and exhibition on the Starkville campus.
Carl Carbonell, a Salt Lake City, Utah-based graphic designer, illustrator and screenprinter, will be on campus Tuesday [Oct. 2] working with art students in Associate Professor Suzanne Powney鈥檚 fall letterpress course.
On Thursday [Oct. 4] from 11 a.m.-noon, members of the campus and surrounding communities are welcome to attend Carbonell鈥檚 talk, 鈥淚dle Hands are the Devil鈥檚 Playthings.鈥 The program is being held in the Robert and Freda Harrison Auditorium at Giles Hall, home to MSU鈥檚 College of Architecture, Art and Design.
Also on Thursday, a public reception will be held from 6-7 p.m. to celebrate the opening of 鈥淭he Carl Carbonell Show!鈥 exhibition on display Oct. 4-Nov. 3 at MSU鈥檚 Visual Arts Center Gallery at 808 University Drive in Starkville. Refreshments and music will be available.
Before moving to Utah in 2016,听Carbonell spent time听working as a designer and letterpress printer at听Hatch Show Print听in Nashville. Carbonell sells his own work听at his online听shop, Meat听&听3听Printing Co.
Lori Neuenfeldt, 绿巨人视频art instructor and gallery director, said Carbonell鈥檚 show serves as a perfect way to continue the celebration of the Department of Art鈥檚 50th anniversary.
鈥淐oming off the success of the Spring Alumni Exhibition, the Department of Art Galleries felt encouraged to focus on continuing to spotlight alumni,鈥 Neuenfeldt said. 鈥淎ssistant Professor Claire Gipson suggested Carl for a gallery exhibition based on his unique graphic style and his ability to relate to students.鈥
