̾Ƶhosts Mississippi Philosophical Association conference this week

STARKVILLE, Miss.— Mississippi State’s Department of Philosophy and Religion is hosting the Mississippi Philosophical Association’s annual conference Friday-Saturday [Feb. 3-4] on the Starkville campus.

Peter Levine, associate dean for research and Lincoln Filene Professor of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Tufts University, is keynote speaker for this year’s event. Taking place at 4:45 p.m. Friday, Levine’s address, as well all other conference events, is free to the public and will be held in 185 McCain Hall.

In addition to ̾Ƶand Tufts University, visiting scholars represent Millsaps College,   Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Tulane University, University of Georgia, University of Memphis and the University of Mississippi.

Administered by the University of Mississippi, the Mississippi Philosophical Association’s members work to increase the understanding and appreciation of philosophy, encourage research and advance the standards and ideals of the teaching of philosophy, and cultivate an interest in the study of philosophy in Mississippi institutions of higher learning. Anthony Neal, ̾Ƶassistant professor of philosophy and program chair for this year’s conference, said the event will bring together scholars from around the country, focusing attention on civic studies through definition and investigations into civic responsibility, among other topics.

“This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Peter Levine, is a prolific writer and scholar on civic studies,” said Neal, who serves as the Mississippi Philosophical Association’s vice president. “I am confident that all students and faculty in attendance will appreciate his profound knowledge in the area.”
